Dear Friends of Hawthorne:
“Charlie” loves his new home complete with meals, activities and
friends. Once alone in the world, Charlie now walks through the
gardens of Hawthorne Care Centre, talking to other residents,
volunteers and staff in a way he could not have done just one
year ago. Charlie is cognitively impaired and has severe hearing
loss, but now when you see Charlie he says “I can hear you know”
and he really can, with his new hearing aids. He has a level of
independence and just the right amount of support as he adjusts
to life at Hawthorne. A whole new world has been opened for him
because he was able to come and live in the new cottages at
Hawthorne Care Centre. He loves his new room filled with his
treasures. He has a job in the garden and is really enjoying
himself every day. There are many more “Charlies” out there who
need this kind of caring support.
Hawthorne Care Centre has been in the midst of redefining what
it means to support our seniors and people with disabilities in
British Columbia. With all the commotion that continues to be
our home and work place as we renovate, we are committed to our
mission of providing our clients with choices and the highest
quality care that supports and promotes wellness in a warm and
welcoming environment. Through the effective use of our
resources we are creating a progressive, vibrant and welcoming
environment. We have a vision that says progressive quality care
in a warm and supportive client centered community is at the
heart of everything we do.
Our innovative cottages are now complete and we have 56 seniors
who live with dementia and other chronic health problems, in a
contemporary environment where they are encouraged to thrive and
grow in all aspects of their life. Hawthorne Care Centre is
proud to be a leader in the area of elder care and is looking
forward to the next phase of the redevelopment plan, offering
“Assisted Living” for the citizens of the Tri-cities.
Hawthorne Assisted Living
The renovated Assisted Living tower will consist of 70 units
where tenants will live in the privacy of their own suite,
benefiting from valuable on-site services which make day-to-day
living a little easier. This will include hospitality services
such as weekly housekeeping, laundry, and daily meals, served in
a central dining room. Some tenants may receive personal support
with tasks like bathing and taking medication. They will have
the opportunity to take part in planned recreational,
therapeutic and social activities.
Tenants will feel secure knowing that each suite comes equipped
with an emergency call system. The building will also have
special common areas including an exercise and wellness centre,
a media theatre, library and computer room and an activity
centre. For those who enjoy the outdoors, there will be lovely
patios and gardens. All of these features are designed to
provide tenants with a variety of choices that improve their
quality of life while supporting them in maintaining an
independent lifestyle.
As you know, caring for people living with disabling conditions
takes commitment, compassion and resources. We have the
commitment and the compassion, but need some help with the
resources. The resources we need will help to create cozy living
space for the residents and tenants of Hawthorne Care Centre. We
are planning creative redevelopment of the existing environment
that will help people to live as independently as possible.
